  • Abstract This paper discusses the dynamic nature of information technology (IT) benefits and reports on findings of a three-year evaluation of user productivity and organizational effectiveness following the installation of an integrated office information system (IS). For systems adopted on a voluntary basis, individual benefits occur first, while improvements in organizational effectiveness develop over a longer period of time. This suggests that the timing of IS assessment is important and that longitudinal research designs are more appropriate for IS benefits evaluation than cross-sectional studies. ()
